Note:430 is subject to embrittlement if used for extended periods in the temperature range of 400-500°C.
CORROSION RESISTANCE
430 has good resistance to a wide variety of corrosive environments including nitric acid and some organic acids. It is generally used for highly polished trim applications in mild atmospheres such as for food processing and dairy equipment. Atmospheric corrosion resistance is good, although in highly polluted or marine environments staining will occur.

FABRICATION
430 has good formability characteristics with useful mechanical properties. Its good ductility allows it to be readily formed by bending and deepdrawing. 430 does not undergo significant work hardenning whwn cold formed.
In order to meet the needs of the market place, Columbus Stainless has developed a deep drawing guality 430. This material designated SX 430 DDQ is suitable for drawn applications such as holloware, sink bowls, etc. To ensure the correct allocation of material, if drawing quality is required, orders must state 430 DDQ. In order to best suit customer’s and use it is imperative that this actual end use is stated when 430 DDQ is ordered.
Being ferritic, 430 is prone to grain growth in the heat affected zone of weldments. As such the tensile, fatigue and toughness properties in the welded condition are poor. 430 should thus not be used for applications where tensile or dynamic loading will be experienced.
430 is generally limited to a combined thickness of 3mm in the welded condition, i.e. for lap joints- this is equivalent to 2 x 1,5 mm thicknesses being welded together. The use of austenitic filler metals such as types 308L, 309L or 316L will improve the ductility of welds to some extent but all welding procedures should nevertheless endeavour to maintain minimum heat inputs.
